LOCAL FILMMAKER’S BOCCE DOCUMENTARY SET TO SCREEN AT THE 2010 OKANAGAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

NORTH VANCOUVER, BC – North Vancouver resident and filmmaker, Tracey Lebedovich, will be screening her independent documentary at the 13th annual Okanagan International Film Festival taking place in Kelowna, B.C. from July 21 to 25th 2010.

Produced, directed and filmed by Ms. Lebedovich on a shoestring budget, Victoria Park – A generation of bocce (www.victoriaparkmovie.com) tells the story of an endearing group of aging Italian-Canadians who for the past fifty years have gathered together to play bocce ball in an East Vancouver community park. These lively and fiercely competitive old-timers are a beloved neighbourhood institution and an important part of the city’s living history and culture.

Located in what was once considered Vancouver’s thriving Little Italy, Victoria Park, and the surrounding Commercial Drive area, is slowly losing its Italian roots as new immigration from Italy all but disappears. As a sign of the times, just as Tracey began filming, the park was slated for major re-construction, leaving the aging gentlemen without their familiar gathering place for months and possibly changing their community’s landscape forever.

The film also follows Rudy and Elsa, an endearing Italian-Canadian couple who are still playing competitive bocce ball at Vancouver’s Italian Cultural Centre well into their 70’s. Through their love of the game, and each other, they hope to somehow attract the next generation of Italian-Canadians to carry on the bocce tradition.

And we meet Raymond Culos. Ray is a passionate second-generation Italian-Canadian and proud grandson to some of Vancouver’s earliest Italian pioneers. Ray is also a local community historian whose quest to retain his cultural traditions has led to him writing four books on the subject and building a traditional bocce court in his own backyard.

With the help of a media arts grant from the BC Arts Council (www.bcartscouncil.ca) and a donation from Delta-based glass and aluminum company, Phoenix Glass Inc. (www.phoenixglassinc.com), Tracey was able to complete her film and is excited to have the film screening for the public this summer in Kelowna. She hopes to be able to host a public screening in East Vancouver sometime this fall.
